Animo Steps up in Class

Boys Soccer: With everyone back from a team that reached the CIF semifinals, the Aztecs aim for the championship game.

There is a first time for everything, but this one may be frightening.  Last year the Animo boys soccer team went 22-3-1 and advanced to the CIF Division V semifinals.

The thing about this year’s squad is – it actually has a senior class.  Everyone is back in uniform for the Aztecs and while last season’s team exceeded expectations, Coach Sergio Medrano expects the added experience to guide his boys deeper into the playoffs.

Our main goal this year is to get to the championship game,” Medrano said.  “Last year our goal was to make the playoffs, but with everyone coming back, I think we have the talent to actually win a championship.”

Senior Richard Flores might be the player who Medrano is most pleased to see returning to this league-independent squad.  Last year the forward scored 43 goals, tallied 15 assists and was named CIF Offensive Player of the Year.  Oh, and he sat out five weeks because of a knee injury.

“He’s one of the best forwards in the area if not all of California,” Medrano said of Flores, who has caught the eye of UCLA, Loyola Marymount, California, and St.

John’s.  “He’s such a natural scorer, the things he can do with the ball and the results he’s produced are incredible.”

Midfielder Angel Rodriguez and fullback/sweeper Alex Diaz will also have important roles in Animo’s success.  Rodriguez had 27 goals and 18 assists last year and is described by Medrano as the Aztec’s most versatile player.  The 6-foot-2 Diaz, meanwhile is at the helm of a defense that allowed just 34 goals last season.

“Alex is a rarity,” Medrano said.  “He’s not just a defender, he has ball skills and passing skills that can set up scoring chances from the back.  He’s also so tall that people have a hard time getting around him.”

Senior goalkeeper Alex Franco, meanwhile, allowed just over one goal per month last season.  Medrano also acclaimed sophomore forward Tibrucio Casillas, who compiled 13 goals and 16 assists last year.

“He’s going to be a star,” Medrano said.

Medrano doesn’t believe his team has any real weaknesses and expects his high-powered offense to keep the scorekeepers busy.

“Last year we were just trying to become known in the area, get a little just trying to become known in the area, get a little pub.” Medrano said.  “Now people are expecting us to do well, they’ve seen us play over the summer and know what we can do.”
