Advisory
The
purpose of Advisory Classes is to provide the necessary life skills to
become a productive adult. The classes are organized by grade level.
Teenagers are beginning to think at a higher level - more abstractly,
analytically, critically, and with greater insights and perspective -
then they had as children. With physical
changes of puberty, the experience of love, and the search for values
and identity, Teenagers are challenged daily to make decisions that
affect the rest of their lives. At Animo Inglewood, we hope to help facilitate students to understand their actions and make positive choices. The following outlines the curriculum focus by grade level:
9th Grade
Stress Management
Effective Communication Skills
Assertive Skills
Building Healthy Relationships
Making Proper Decisions
Learning to Cope with Life's Problems
Developing Self Respect
Understanding one's strengths
Goal setting
Crisis Intervention
10th Grade
All 10th grade students have an opportunity to create and implement a community service project. The goal of service learning in to promote active involvement in our communities and foster responsibility and community activism.
Each 10th grade class will have the opportunity to nominate two student representatives that will create and implement lessons to their peers. These representatives form the Student Advisory Committee and their purpose is to create meaningful lessons and activities that are geared towards the interests of their peers.
Along with the above activities, 10th grade students will review some of the life skills activities presented in the 9th grade.
11th Grade
The junior year of high school is a critical stage in college planning. Therefore advisory during this grade level will focus on strengthening student's college application. Students will focus on test preparation for the SAT, SATII, and ACT. Students will also create personal statements and create a portfolio that will include financial aid and college application materials.
12th Grade
After students have completed their college application during the fall, advisory classes for seniors will focus on career exploration and development. Students will create résumés, participate in internships, and learn the etiquette of the professional world. Students will have the opportunity to practice completing job applications and practice interviewing skills. The students will create a career portfolio that will showcase their talents and skills to employers.
