1. Reading comprehension—Students will build mastery of reading comprehension of various text genres. Teachers will facilitate this by providing consistent and varied approaches to reading, targeted instruction and intervention and on-going independent practice for students.

2. Clear expression of ideas—Students will be able to express their ideas orally, in writing, through visual and technological media and in their actions.  Teachers will facilitate this by including expression of ideas in assessment for each unit they teach and by devoting instructional time to writing and oral expression in each academic area.

3. Developing tools of inquiry—Students will be able to access information from various sources through media, questioning and text. They will demonstrate their college-readiness by being able to use the information they access in written and oral presentations and by illustrating the ways that inquiry leads to knowledge. Teachers will facilitate this by teaching inquiry directly and by requiring research reports in their classes.

4. Effective problem-solving—Students will build critical-thinking skills by solving problems in all academic courses. They will also use this skill in analyzing the choices of history and their impact and being able to translate that analysis to current choices in their lives. Teachers will facilitate this by providing problem-solving scenarios in their classes and by explicitly teaching the steps to problem-solving in various courses.

5. Advocacy for self and others—Students will develop the skills to advocate for themselves and others in order to uplift their community.  Teachers will facilitate this by incorporating service learning into their curricula in upper-class courses and by preparing students for service learning projects in lower grades through small-scale projects.
