2-27-2006: Our science team project has made it to finals! We made it to the 3 top teams in Southern California. Final judging will be at USC on Tuesday. If they win, they will earn a trip to Hawaii. The following students are members of the science team:
Anthony Grimaldo, Carolin Chorr, Christina Caldera, Elysse Madarang, Ian Nelson, Sandra Menendez, and Katie Griffith.
On Thursday, the team will receive their award at the Quiksilver Corporate Office (they are the sponsors) in Huntington Beach. Congratulate the team members when you see them on campus.
Ánimo Venice is participating in an exciting marine science project with UCLA. The new research project is in the Santa Monica Bay. The students work with a research team that goes out into to a specific mooring site in order to collect water samples for chemical and biological analyses in the the lab. The students will analyze the chorophyll, salinity, and temperature and different depths. We are grateful to Dr. Gruber, UCLA professor, for sharing his research project with us and for our grant support from the National Science Foundation. View the students' website. |
Ánimo Venice Rugby Team Update |
|
1-14-2006: This Saturday, the brand-new Santa Monica Youth Rugby Under-16s team
played a scrimmage against a mixed U14 and U16 Lakes Wildcats team.
The team, consisting of quite a few Ánimo players with one practice
under their belt, beat Lakes 20-15 in 3 20-minute segments. The
Ánimo players did an incredible job, working very well with their
more experienced counterparts. There were some incredible plays,
including Christian Staine's spectacular tackles, Elio Garces'
straight-up-the-field-through-four-defenders run, Antony Almendarez's
run up the side of the field, nearly scoring a perfect try, Francisco
Portillo's tearing off a scrum to crush the opposite scrumhalf,
Cornell Odom's quick runs and speedy passes, Daniel Stinson's
excellent hands at flyhalf, Charles Nunnelly's strong rucking and
Ricky Garcia's solid turn at fullback. Christian Staine, Ryan
Moreno, Daniel Stinson and Brian Williams did score, all with strong
runs, and off some impressive passing and playmaking. The Ref, who
coaches the current National Champion Men's Team, was very impressed
with our team, and I heard some great things from all of the coaches.
Players from Ánimo:
Elio Garces, Tony Almendarez, Christian Staine, Charles Nunnelly,
Ryan Moreno, Francisco Portillo, Daniel Stinson, Brian Williams,
Cornell Odom, Ricky Garcia and... Dara Del Rosario, who couldn't play
because of the whole separating the genders rule- Let's work on
getting some girls out there!!!!!!

Featured Student: Frank Millan |
|

Frank was the 2002 national Spin-Top contest champion in his age group (see link). He comes from a family of yo-yo meisters, with his father and brother taking top spots in the 2004 Nationals at Chico. Despite facing greater competition in this year's nationals, Frank still made 4th place in the 14-16 year old age group. |
